Brewers 1-0 Chesterfield

Burton Albion completed an impressive treble over Chesterfield thanks to a first half goal from Aaron Webster. In a pulsating match the Brewers prooved they would not be sucked into a relegation scrap despite the fixture backlog could have won by a greater margin.

Calvin Zola and Jacques Maghoma were hugely impressive but the performance of the whole team will have delighted Paul Peschisolido.

Brewers boss Paul Peschisolido reverted to the 4-2-3-1 formation for the Friday evening visit of league leaders Chesterfield to the Pirelli Stadium.

Calvin Zola took the lone frontman role with new loan signing Sam Winnall on the bench. Scott Malone missed out through illness with Paul Boertien coming in at left back. There was a change at right back also with Andy Corbett returning to the starting line up in place of the injured Ryan Austin.

Elsewhere Aaron Webtser and John McGrath returned to the starting line up in place of Greg Pearson and Lewis Young. Tony James also camein for Darren Moore.

And with only three minutes on the clock Jacques Maghoma almost put the Brewers one up, racing onto a long clearance from Adam Legzdins but firing into the side netting. A minute later Craig Davies turned Tony James and beared down on goal from the left but an excellent sliding challenge from Nathan Stanton disposed the Spireites striker.

The Brewers took the lead in the fifth minute when Andy Corbett found Maghoma in acres of space 30 yards out, he then played in Aaron WEBSTER on the edge of the area who superbly curled the ball left footed past the sprawling Tommy Lee in the Chesterfield net.

Calvin Zola had the next effort on goal for the Brewers. Russell Penn played the ball through to the big frontman who bundled his way past one defender before hitting the ball on the volley into the arms of Lee.

Chesterfield nearly levelled in the 19th minute through Davies. Scott Griffiths picked up the ball on the left wing and crossed for Davies who attempted a deft flick on goal which Legzdins was alert to.

Maghoma had a sight on goal again in the 23rd minute. Calvin Zola did well to flick on Legzdins' goalkick into Maghoma's path but the midfielder sent his shot just wide of the far post from 20 yards.

Dwayne Mattis forced a good save out of Legzdins in the 30th minute when he fired in a dipping shot from 25 yards after the Brewers had failed to properly clear from a corner.

There were shouts for a Brewers penalty in the 37th minute when firstly Webster had a shot charged down, the loose ball fell to Maghoma who appeared to have his legs taken from under him, Calvin Zola eventually got a shot away with the ball deflected behind for a corner.

Zola then hit the bar when the corner kick went all the way through to Webster on the right who curled in a cross for Zola to get a header on goal. And with the Brewers pushing for a second Russ Penn then whipped a powerful shot just wide of the keepers' right hand post a minute later.

Calvin Zola then had another good chance, dragging a shot from 18 yards out in the right channel just wide of the far post. It had been a flurry of action within two minutes with the Brewers looking to double their lead before the break.

Half time: Burton Albion 1-0 Chesterfield

Chesterfield made one change at the break bringing on Ian Breckin in place of Dwayne Mattis who had picked up an injury towards the end of the first half.

The Brewers made a bright start to the half and had the ball in the net through Adam Bolder but the flag was up against Paul Boertien for offside. Chesterfield had a chance of their own but Deane Smalley sent his looping header from six yards out just over the bar.

Zola went close to getting on the end of a couple of crosses, firstly from Boertien and then from Bolder but found himself inches away from a connection on both occasions.

John Sheridan made his second substitution of the evening bringing on Jordan Bowery for Craig Davies in the 60th minute.

Paul Peschisolido then brought on Sam Winnall for his first appearance for the Brewers in place of Russell Penn in the 64th minute.

Chesterfield then made their last change, Scott Boden taking to the field in the place of Derek Niven.

Yet again the Brewers went close when Andy Corbett sent in a long range shot which was deflected into the path of Zola who hammered it low and hard forcing a save out of Lee. Webster then went close with a delicate chip from the edge of the area which had Lee beaten but just floated past the far post.

Loanee Sam Winnall then had his sights on goal in the 71st minute, shooting high and wide from 20 yards after a wonderful passing move from the Brewers.

Nathan Stanton came to the Brewers rescue in the 78th minute, chasing down Jordan Bowery and making a clean tackle when the striker was through on goal.

But Stanton was forced off five minutes with what appeared to be a nasty blow to the head, Darren Moore came on as his replacement.

Greg Pearson was brought on for the last 3 minutes in place of the impressive Calvin Zola.
