Burton Albion produced their second fine display of the week to earn a 2-0 victory over Paulo Di Canio's Swindon Town. The win earned the Brewers their first back to back league victories since the final two games of the 2009-10 season. A debut goal for Billy Kee gave Albion a first half lead, the former Torquay striker chesting in Justin Richards cross. Jacques Maghoma made it two for Burton, capitalising on a mistake by Swindon keeper Mattia Lanzano to finish from 18 yards. Burton then were able to see out the game under little pressure from the visitors.
Jacques Maghoma made a surprise return to the Brewers starting eleven after coming through a late fitness test. The midfielder had been expected to miss at least another week after suffering an ankle injury in last Saturday's 2-2 draw at Oxford United. Maghoma replaced Chris Palmer on the wing. A hamstring strain picked up in training this week sidelined striker Calvin Zola, with Billy Kee coming in to make his full debut since joining Burton Albion from Torquay.
Both teams headed into the match in good form with Swindon having won their last three league matches.
It was a lively opening to the match with both sides looking to attack from the outset. An early move forward from the Brewers broke down with a misplaced cross by Aaron Webster. Matt Ritchie was also looking threatening on the left for the visitors, firing two dangerous ball through the Burton area with no Swindon man able to get the final touch.
A left footed cross from the right from Ritchie almost set up Alan Connell to score, the former Grimsby Town striker nodded the ball narrowly wide. Jonathon Smith then had a great chance in the 17th minute, getting on the end of a through ball after an nice SWindon passing move, but seeing his shot from 18 yards saved low down by Atkins.
Burton took the lead in the 21st minute thanks to a debut goal for Billy Kee. Justin Richards made it after chasing down James' ball over the top before shifting the ball past a defender to cross for Kee who was arriving in the six yard box to chest the ball into the goal.
Richards had a glimpse of goal in the 30th minute, latching onto Bolder's ball forwards but curling his effort over the bar left footed from 20 yards. Mehdi Karrouche then fired a freekick into the Swindon fans behind the goal from a 25 yard freekick 5 minutes later.
Andy Corbett put in a superb cross with five minutes of the half remaining, Kee was in the centre but the ball was just too high for the striker after his second Burton goal.
Half time: Burton Albion 1-0 Swindon Town
Swindon made one change at the nreak, bringing on Miles Storey for Alan Connell.
Burton doubled their lead two minutes into the second half thanks to a scuffed clearance by Mattia Lanzano under pressure by Richards, the ball reached Maghoma on the edge of the 18 yard box and he finished cooly past the Swindon keeper into the bottom corner.
Swindon were looking to build pressure on the Brewers after condeding the second and maintained the ball in the final tird through a succession of corners. Burton continued to defend well and in the 60th minute Paul Peschisolido brought on Danny Blanchett for the goalscorer Billy Kee.
Blanchett went straight in at left back with Webster moving forward into midfielder. Maghoma slotted in behind Richards up front.
Swindon made their second change in the 64th minute, bringing on Ahmed Abdulla for Simon Ferry. Abdulla was straight into the action with a 25 yard shot which flew wide of Atkins' goal.
Alessandro Cibocci was Swindon's third change, he came on for Raffaele De Vita. As the game entered the last 20 minutes Burton were not under any undue pressure with possession evenly shared.
Chris Palmer came on for the final ten minutes in place of Jacques Maghoma.
Alan McCormack was lucky to get away with only a yellow card after pulling down Richards who looked to be in on goal. Palmer hit the resulting freekick into the wall.
Burton were able to see out the match with ease, Peschisolido replacing Justin Richards with Adi Yussuf on 90 minutes.
