Summerfield: We deserved it

Assistant manager pleased with hard-fought win

Burton Albion assistant manager Kevin Summerfield felt the Brewers fully deserved their win against Wycombe Wanderers.

Adam McGurk scored the only goal of the game, and Summerfield said the team worked hard against difficult opponents.

“It was a hard fought win. We know what Wycombe are about. They’re a tough team and make it difficult to play. They play with a high tempo like we do and the first goal was always crucial, and luckily we got it through some really good play, and from there I thought we deserved to win the game,” said Summerfield.

The Brewers dominated the first half without making the breakthrough before half-time, and Summerfield was unconcerned that the team couldn’t take advantage of their dominance early on.

“I don’t think we thought of that too much. The game was going end-to-end and we produced a lot, getting into good positions. There was very little in the game in the first half and we needed the first goal. After we scored the game opened up and we had chances to add to our total,” Summerfield said.

McGurk’s goal was a result of good build-up play from the two strikers, and Summerfield says the victory was a good team performance.

“It’s a terrific goal, and they were inventive tonight. They got into good positions, linked up well together and hopefully Adam will be fit enough to play on Saturday.

“It proves that we have options. Neither David (Gray) or Callum (McFadzean) are out and out wingers, and they both did a great job for the team.

“I think everyone in the ground got a bit wary when five minutes were added on, but I thought we saw the game out much better tonight.”
