CANSDELL-SHERRIFF: WE KNEW OUR STRENGTHS

Defeder praises team after dumping out Championship Wigan

Burton Albion defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff has had a somewhat busier eek than usual, with tonight’s 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic following the birth of a baby boy last week.

Cansdell-Sherriff made his first appearance after missing out on Saturday against Oxford United, and he’s heaped praise on his team-mates after battling back from going a goal down.

“It’s been a busy week for me with the family. Unfortunately I didn’t get enough training for Saturday’s game but the boys did fantastically again against very good opposition.

“The way we set up was to frustrate them a bit, but we knew our strengths and made sure we could deliver. It was difficult at the end when they were pushing forward for the equaliser, but the boys defended really well and it was a real team effort,” he said.

Much was made of the Brewers’ defensive strengths last season, and that showed again against the Latics as the Championship opposition were restricted to few chances on Jon McLaughlin’s goal.

“Hopefully we can keep building on it. A lot of our confidence comes from feeling safe, and that’s a good place to start. We showed that last year and hopefully we can build this year and get even better,” he added.

The Brewers showed character to come back after Marc Antoine-Fortune’s opener, and the Australian defender has spoken of the positive belief within the squad.

“To come back from a goal down shows a lot of confidence n this team. People say it’s hard to come back from a Wembley disappointment and that teams can fall apart, but I don’t see that here. There’s a great mentality in the side and to come back with such a fighting spirit is always fantastic.

“You can leave yourself exposed sometimes but we had a game plan and stuck to it, and the result showed. We have to take every game as it comes and we’re looking forward to the next round.”
