ROWETT: IT'S ABOUT SHOWING CHARACTER WHEN YOU GET THOSE LITTLE SETBACKS

17 September 2014

Brewers boss Gary Rowett was disappointed with his side’s poor start. The Brewers conceded two first-half goals and Rowett believes you could sense very early it was going to be a tough evening at the Kingsmeadow.

“We started very poorly and after the first 5/10 minutes you could kind of sense it very early.

“We had a chance to clear our lines and we didn't do so. They'd get a block, they'd get some momentum, balls went into Akinfenwa and all of a sudden he's shrugging our central defenders off.

“I think they're going to be a difficult team to play against and the fact they haven't won many home games so far surprises me.

“We highlighted it in the week that any team with Akinfenwa and Tubbs as a front pairing are going to be very difficult to play against and I don't think we defended very well against them at all.

“I'd say that early on in the game I could sense that perhaps we looked a little bit leggy and looked like we'd had a reasonably long journey down and sometimes you have to accept that, as disappointing as it was.”

The gaffer however wasn’t disappointed with conceding the two goals it was the way his side let Wimbledon score that disappointed him.

“You start the game with two very very poor goals to concede and sometimes you don't mind if the other team has scored an amazing goal against you because you can hold your hands up. But to score two goals so easily I think was the biggest disappointment for me.

“We've got our shape quite well in games and against teams like this where we've got to get our shape 10/15 yards further up the pitch.

“I don't think the first goal came from dropping in too deep, it came from not dropping in deep enough and one ball over the top where Tubbs runs on to it and finishes it. It's an excellent finish, but you'll be very disappointed if you concede goals like that all the time.

“The second goal comes from a throw-in that gets thrown to a winger who turns and has 10 yards of space to cross it and Akinfenwa heads it with no-one against him."

Despite picking up their first defeat Rowett believes there’s been plenty of positives so far this season.

“We've spoke to the lads and said listen we've started the season fantastically well and it's all about constant improvements. It's now about showing character when you get those little setbacks.

“We're still top of the league and we've not played well at all, so we need to do something about it in the next game.

“They're all tough games at the moment and we've got them, then Brighton, Cheltenham and Doncaster in the JPT. It would be nice without looking to far ahead to navigate through these games and come out of it the other side still smiling and still fit with lots of players to choose from.

“I think that's the danger when you look at the start of the seaso, because it's been a really tough start and as one manager remarked last week, that the amount of games really does challenge the smaller squads at the lower end of the divisions.

“We've been ok so far and we've got lots of players we can utilise in some of the cup games and I think we're going to have to spread the load out to make sure we get through this period safely.

“We've spoken that Portsmouth was the start of a really difficult month. We beat Portsmouth, we beat York, but we've come unstuck at Wimbledon and we can't be too unhappy with 6 points from 9.”
