SUMMERFIELD: THAT WAS THE BEST HALF WE'VE PLAYED

27 September 2014

Assistant manager delighted with the Brewers first-half.

The Brewers were able to put a difficult week of three defeats behind them to beat Cheltenham with an excellent home display. But for Kevin Summerfield it wasn't the attacking creativity that pleased him, it was the resolute defending that helped keep an invaluable clean sheet.

"It's the critical point of our game and we've been working on it this week," he told Brewers Player.

"After the past three games the goals we've conceded were poor, but it was a great response from the boys today.

"We've had to defend an awful lot better second-half and they coped with it admirably.

"We spoke about it at half-time and on the bench that, that this was the best half we've played.

"The first-half was really really good and we passed it, created chances, got down the sides and put crosses in.

"It was all looking really good and we weren't asked to defend an awful lot first-half."

Despite the recent blip, Kev was keen to stress that the squad hadn't been at full strength these past couple of weeks.

"We've been hit with injuries over the last two or three weeks.

"Lucas has had problems with his hand and foot, Adam's been in and out and we've been nursing Stuart along.

"Macca has been a big miss for us, but these are the sort of things you're going to go through at some stage of the season and I think we've got a good enough squad to pick a team that will go and get results."

So far the team has got those results as today's victory meant the Brewers returned to the top of League Two.

"I think it could be that type of season, where they'll be a lot of chopping and changing.

"I don't think there's a great deal between the teams in the league.

"Bury were very good last week and they probably gave us our hardest game so far.

"Today was a tough game for different reasons, but you've just got to cope with whatever the opposition throw at you.

"If you can get a clean sheet and get a point, you've got something out the game and those points add up at the end of the season."
