BREWERS SIGN LUKE VARNEY ON AN 18-MONTH DEAL

4 January 2017

BURTON Albion have signed Luke Varney from Ipswich Town on an 18-month contract.

The 34-year-old striker has a wealth of Championship experience and was previously managed by Nigel Clough at Derby County.

The Brewers boss said: “He’s a good, experienced Championship player who we hope will help us out in the second half of the season. He plays a few different positions, wide midfield or up front and we know Luke from our time at Derby.

“He’s featured for Ipswich this season and got a couple of goals as well but wanted to come back to the area and he will be a good addition to our squad.

“He gives us something different to what we have got and is a good signing for us at this stage. He only signed a six-month deal at Ipswich which is why he is available in January.”

Ipswich have agreed to release Varney early from his contract in order for him to join the Brewers in time for the FA Cup trip to Watford on Saturday.

Varney began his career at non-League side Quorn before joining Crewe Alexandra and emerging as one of the brightest young talents outside of the Premier League.

He then secured a switch to Charlton Athletic, spending two years at The Valley before moving to Derby County- initially on loan.

Loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool - who he played for in the Premier League - followed, before Luke moved to Portsmouth.

Varney initially joined Ipswich on loan from Blackburn Rovers before completing a permanent switch in December 2015.
