NIGEL Clough is hoping to welcome in the New Year with a new signing for the Brewers.
As the transfer window reopens, the Albion boss hopes to bring in up to four new signings with one being lined up before the Brewers take on Preston on January 2.
Clough said: “Positional wise we will take a player anywhere. We aren’t looking for a goalkeeper but after that we are looking at any position on the pitch that will improve us to make that little bit of a difference to turn narrow defeats into draws and wins.
“We have a couple of permanent deals under discussion and maybe a loan or two as well but that depends on who goes back from the loans we have got.
“We hope to get one in before the Preston game. It’s always tight with the deadline getting the paperwork sorted out but we are hoping to get someone in.
“We are looking for a striker but anywhere that improves us and we have injuries in the defensive department at the moment. We can’t afford a goal scorer who is really top notch so whoever we take in will be a gamble and you hope they hit form and get a goal or two. The one thing is that the chances are there, people looking from the outside will see that and will want to play in that sort of team.
“We knew we had to improve the squad in the summer and the players we brought in did that but now we need to improve it again. The targets are quite widespread and hopefully we might surprise a few people.
“We have to sort out what’s happening with the players currently on loan. Jamie Ward is on a season-long and is the only one with no break out of the five loans so we will sort those out and see what slots we have available.
“We need to see who we can get in before sending any back. We can take more than five loans but them someone can’t be involved in the 18 and that seems a bit pointless.
“We aren’t too heavy on numbers and had a bare 18 against Aston Villa and at this time of year the squad gets stretched with injuries but Callum Reilly needs to get out and play football now and we will try and help him with that.”
