CLOUGH LOOKS FORWARD TO FA CUP CLASH

6 January 2017

NIGEL Clough is looking forward to a break in Championship action and would love to make progress in the FA Cup.

The Brewers enter the competition at the Third Round stage for the first time in the club’s history with an away trip to Watford tomorrow.

Clough says it shows how far the club has come: “As a non league club it was our aim just to get to the Third Round proper and get a League One or Two club so it’s lovely to go in at the Third Round.

“The draw hasn’t been particularly kind to us with a Premier League side away but we will do our best. Watford have a few injuries as well so it’s going to be an interesting game.

“We have Wigan the week after then Cardiff, Derby and Fulham this month and they are the priorities for us but we will put the best possible side out and do everything we can to get through.

“Against Preston we looked mentally tired. It has been a tough few months especially losing the games we have recently by the odd goal. To be that close and not get a couple of draws means we are feeling a little bit sorry for ourselves but there’s not time for that and whatever has happened has happened.

“So the FA Cup is a bit of a breather. We would love a cup run. We always believe that success in the cup can go hand-in-hand with success in the league. It happened for us at Sheffield United where it was the FA Cup that got our league form going that first season.

“For the supporters as well we want to get through and see if we can get a glamorous tie here or away from home. That’s what the FA Cup is all about and the financial side for the club as well.

"We will do everything we can to get through and if we can’t then bring them back here in ten days’ time. I think like us their priority will be the league but they will want to get through as well.”
