CLOUGH PLEASED WITH HOME DEBUT DUO.

27 July 2016

BREWERS manager Nigel Clough was pleased with how Lloyd Dyer and Lee Williamson fared on their home debuts against Queen Parks Rangers.

“I think it was evident tonight even in a friendly that they will bring valuable experience to the side in the coming season. Lee has been excellent since he came in, he knows his position inside out in midfield and I felt he was one of the best players out there.

We hope the injury he got tonight on his ankle is just a sore one and nothing too serious.

In terms of Lloyd, despite being 33 he still has that bit of pace in his locker. We used him a new formation tonight and we felt he coped well.”

Clough also spoke about the new look formation that was used against QPR:

“We were pleased with how the formation worked, we did intend to try it against Exeter but with Mous taking a knock that changed our plans.

That’s the point of pre-season to try new things ahead of the season to see if they work. It is one we may use at times in the season, we are undecided yet.

We will speak to the players and see how they felt it worked because they have to buy into it and be willing to persevere with it.”

Tom Flanagan has been played in a right back/wing back role throughout pre-season and Clough believes that’s where he could fit in his squad this season:

“Having strengthened our options in the central area of defence with the likes of Ben Turner and Kyle McFadzean, Tom may find himself at right back. He has a great work ethic, is good on the ball and versatile.

We have a few players that can play in numerous positions, which is certainly going to help us throughout the season.”
