MCCRORY BELIEVES DEFENCE WILL BE STRONG IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP

28 June 2016

DAMIEN McCrory believes that defence can be Burton Abion’s strength again next season.

After signing a new two-year deal, the left back wants to pick up where he left off last season.

He said: “Since I signed four years ago, our defence has done well every season and the Gaffer will want to see that continue, especially in the Championship because if you are conceding a lot of goals you are highly unlikely to get any points from any games. I think with the players we have at the moment and the defence we have got we can continue to do that.”

For McCrory it has been an unbelievable four years at the Brewers.

He said: “I would have probably not believed it if you had told me back in 2012 when I first came here we would be in the Championship but then but we had two seasons in League Two where we deserved to go up both times before we got promoted. Even last season in League One, I started to believe early on that we could do this and go up to the Championship. Now we have got there and achieved that we really need to stay there and make that the priority this season.”

Nigel Clough says that left backs are in short supply, which is another reason he’s delighted to have secured McCrory’s services.

McCrory said: “Full back is a very important position and I’m lucky enough to be a left-footed full back and there’s not many around and there’s quite a demand. I know I can do a job for the Gaffer, continue to do well and help the team go on to bigger and better things."

Now he’s looking forward to the new season.

He said: “I looked at the first month and thought what a tough month. There are no easy games in the Championship and every game will be like a cup final for us. I’m looking forward to the challenge.

“For me, it only sunk in when the fixtures came out and you see the likes of Newcastle and Aston Villa. I don’t want to have that for just one season I want that to continue - that’s the plan!”
