JAMIE WARD JOINS BURTON ALBION

31 August 2016

JAMIE Ward has joined Burton Albion on a season-long loan from Nottingham Forest.

The 30-year-old forward began his career as a trainee with Aston Villa before turning professional in 2005. He was released by Villa and then joined Torquay United on a three-year deal.

He has since gone on to represent Chesterfield, Sheffield United, Derby County and most recently Nottingham Forest.

Ward has worked under Nigel Clough before. The Brewers boss signed him on-loan at Derby County during the 2010/11 season before making that move permanent.

On July 2, 2015 Ward signed for Derby County’s East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest on a four-year deal after his contract had expired at the iPro Stadium.

Ward has also represented  Northern Ireland more than 15 times and was included in the Euro 2016 squad which travelled to France. He will now link up with Tom Flanagan, who has also been called up to the Northern Ireland squad for their World Cup qualifiers.

Ward will also reunite with former-team mates Stephen Bywater, John Brayford, Shaun Barker and Tom Naylor at the Pirelli Stadium.

Brewers boss Nigel Clough said: "We know Jamie well. He's a current Northern Ireland international and he will give us another very good striking option.

"We are delighted with the business we have done so far in this window and if this squad stays fully fit, it gives us a chance up until January.

"It means we have four internationals now in the squad which is also a sign of how far we have come as a club."

Clough thinks Ward helps give his squad the right balance between youth and experience.

He said: "We have youngsters like Marcus Harness, Hamza Choudhury, Will Miller, Ryan Delaney and Ben Fox so I think it's good to add some more real Championship experience.

"He can be a fiery character but I don't think a bit of edge will go amiss in the next few months. A bit of aggression all over the pitch is probably what we need."

The deal will be completed subject to paperwork. Ward will wear the number 12 shirt.
