LUKE VARNEY INTERVIEW

4 January 2017

LUKE Varney says coming to Burton Albion will be a 'fresh challenge' that will keep him 'hungry'.

The 34-year-old has signed an 18-month contract after making the move to the Pirelli Stadium from Ipswich Town.

He said: “I’m delighted to have got it over the line and sorted and hopefully I can crack on now. It’s a challenge and it’s a bit of security for me as well after working on short term contracts at Ipswich. Now I can really get me teeth into it and the club is local to me as well so I’m really looking forward to it.

“I know what the manager expects from his players after working with him at Derby and I hope he can get the best out of me again.

“We all know what we have got in front of us now and I will be fighting for my place to start with and whatever I can add on and off the pitch I will be delighted to do so. I have done that at all my previous clubs and I will give 100 per cent – the manager knows that whatever is asked of me I will do my best.”

Varney has seen Albion play this season.

“I have seen the Sky games like against Derby and the lads have done really well and even when you came to Ipswich I thought Burton played really well so I knew I would be interested in the move.”

Varney goes straight into the squad for the FA Cup tie at Watford.

He said: “Once I made it aware that I wasn’t going to be staying at Ipswich it was a bit of a risk me playing in the cup for them with my contract ending a couple of days later so I’m thankful to the club and the manager in letting me come out of it a bit early so I could get this sorted.

“The games in the Championship are tough and then you get an FA Cup tie at Watford. I‘m looking forward to training and meeting the lads and hopefully if I get a few minutes I’m looking forward to a good debut.”
