MURPHY ENOJYING ROLE AT BREWERS

16 March 2017

Brewers midfielder Luke Murphy said he is grateful to manager Nigel Clough as he his enjoying his loan spell since joining from Leeds United in January.

Murphy said: “All I wanted to do when I arrived was to play first-team football having missed the first part of the season. I wanted to get back to loving my football again and I am grateful to the manager for that as I am. He has shown faith in me and has been playing me in a deeper role something I have played a few times before but now playing it consistently, I feel I am getting better at it and it’s added an extra dimension to my game.

“Of course I want to score more goals. I would describe myself as goal scoring midfielder in the past but they’ve dried up a bit because of the role I am playing, which doesn’t allow me to get as forward as much. It requires me to take care of the opposing player off the front and take a bit of pressure off the back four when I can.”

Murphy also said he has faith in the squad to finish the job in their quest for Championship survival: “We just need to concentrate on ourselves, keep doing the right things, we are on a good run at the moment with being six unbeaten. However, when we seem to win other teams in and around us do or pick up points. We do what we have to do to get the results, we look dangerous at the other end and have started to defend much better. We’ve been in games where the opposition have had a lot of the ball but we’ve created the better of the chances.”

With just five home games left of the season Murphy spoke of the importance of carrying on the good home form: “When I first signed the manager said that the Pirelli is a place that opposing players do not enjoy coming to and I’ve seen that. We know we need to pick up the majority of our points here and fancy ourselves against anyone here and then we need to try and get as many as we can on the road.”
