NIGEL CLOUGH'S WIGAN VERDICT

14 January 2017

NIGEL Clough said that two defensive lapses cost his team the points after they went down 2-0 to Wigan.

The Brewers boss said: "It was two soft goals that cost us the game - there was nothing much else between the two teams today.

"We didn't get any free headers in their penalty area - they got two and put them away.

"I thought we played quite well at times and there were a lot of scrambles around the penalty area but we conceded two poor goals, one 30 seconds before half time again which has been a feature of the last few weeks. When they went in at half time having just scored it lifted them immensely and we lost a bit of confidence which is what happens when you are losing games at home.

"When you have lost the last four at home and things aren't going your way it's inevitable that you do lose confidence to a degree,

"But we did play some good stuff today and we put a side out to try and win the game but that left us light on attacking options on the bench with no Varney, Miller or Irvine.

"They got some  great blocks in but we still have to do more and if we stop conceding soft goals something will drop."

Jon McLaughlin had to go off injured at half-time but Clough hopes the Brewers No 1 will recover quickly.

He said: "He got a whack and landed  heavily and was dazed so no risk and he was straight off. There was no concussion so hopefully he will be OK."
