STRENGTH OF THE BENCH IS A MAJOR BOOST FOR BREWERS

15 March 2017

STRENGTH on the bench has been a key factor in Burton Albion’s six-game unbeaten run says Nigel Clough.

The Albion boss needed that on Saturday against Nottingham Forest as Marvin Sordell and Luke Varney both came off injured.

He said: “You look at the bench at the moment and it’s extremely strong and we couldn’t put Chris O’Grady and Will Miller in there because of a limit on the number of loan players you can name. Lee Williamson and Damien McCrory weren’t in the 18. It’s a good time to be going into the final stretch with just about everybody fit.

“Having Lucas Akins back available for us on Saturday was very important as we needed him with the injuries.”

“We try and balance the bench with two defenders, two midfielders and two attackers if we can to give us those options as, like Saturday, you never know what can happen. So having that strength in depth on the bench is very important.”

Sordell and Varney are now doubts for Saturday's home clash with Brentford with Clough rating their chances as 50-50.
