BURTON Albion are back on home soil tomorrow afternoon as they host Wigan Athletic in the Sky Bet Championship, 3PM kick off.

The Brewers have lost their last three games at home, despite putting in meaningful displays against Huddersfield, Newcastle and Preston, but Nigel Clough’s men will be raring to go after a break from Championship football recently.

Wigan haven’t improved much under their new manager Warren Joyce. The Latics didn’t win a game in December, losing five of their six games but they recently picked up a good win against Nottingham Forest in the Emirates FA Cup last time out.

Between them, Gary Caldwell and Warren Joyce have tried to shape the squad for the Championship during the summer, and in total Wigan have signed 15 players so far this season, including Jodie Gomez, Jake Buxton and Nick Powell. The Latics did have to allow players to leave, and 21 did just that, although nine of those are loan deals.

Nigel Clough’s might not have a large bunch of players to choose from thanks to a sickness bug and a long list of injuries.

Clough said: “We have been hit by a sickness bug the last few days and only had 12 outfield players at training so we are down on numbers with illness and injury.”

Luke Varney (punctured lung), Will Miller (hamstring), Ben Turner (hamstring), Chris O’Grady (calf strain) and Jackson Irvine (groin) are all facing fitness battles. New signing Varney is the longest-term injury casualty after suffering a punctured lung at Watford.

The Brewers boss is hoping to keep Wigan at bay tomorrow afternoon in a game they will be looking to take advantage of.

He said: “With Warren Joyce in now as manager and a good win in the cup last week they will see this as a game where they can gain ground on us and that’s something we don’t want to happen.

“They have some extremely good players and they have invested in the last couple of seasons so they can still turn it around, and in the second half of the season will be looking to do that.”

Andy Woolmer was the original referee for tomorrow's game but has picked up an injury and has been replaced by Andrew Madley. The West Yorkshire-based referee has brandished on average 3 yellow cards per game and has dished out just two red cards in his 25 games this season. Andrew officiated Burton Albion's home victory against Cardiff City back in October.
