AKINS BACKS HIMSELF BETWEEN THE STICKS

6 March 2015

Lucas Akins has backed himself playing out of position, even in goal!

The winger has featured 11 times under Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. He picked up an injury in his first game under Hasselbaink in a 3-1 win away at Wycombe which kept him out until January 10th where he made his return against Mansfield Town in a 2-1 win at the Pirelli Stadium.

Akins scored his first goal since October as he netted against Oxford United, again at the Pirelli Stadium in February.

The arrival of Calero on loan from Derby County and Nasser Al Khayati from Kozakken Boyz meant that there would be fierce competition in the wide attacking position, however Akins has managed to cement his place in the side, predominantly on the left.

However under the tactics of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Akins and whoever his fellow wide team mate may be, they have been swapping wings mid-way during matches but Akins insists that the main thing is being on the football pitch.

“As long as you are on the football pitch, that is the main thing.”

It isn’t something you would normally hear from an attacking winger, but Akins said he would be happy playing right back, left back or even playing between the sticks.

“Whether I’m playing right back, left back or goalkeeper I am happy as long as I am on the pitch.”
