BERNARD IS CLUB'S FIRST FAN OF THE YEAR

5 May 2016

LONG-STANDING Burton Albion fan Bernard Lawes is the club’s first Fan of the Year.

He receives the George Rider Memorial Trophy - an annual award for a supporter who has shown dedication and commitment beyond the norm in following the Brewers.

The trophy has been donated by Margaret Morton, whose grandfather George Rider was a long-standing Brewers fan.

George was the treasurer of the old Burton Albion Supporters’ Club. He was a dedicated Brewers supporter at the old Lloyd’s ground on Wellington Street, where he worked on the turnstiles.

Margaret said: “I wanted my grandfather to be remembered for his dedication to Burton Albion and this trophy goes to a fan who has shown the same devotion and commitment to the football club.”

Bernard, now in his 80s, has been following Burton Albion from the very first season back in 1950, and has a seat at the Pirelli Stadium to this day.

His passion for the club was highlighted by fellow supporter Steve Smith who said: “For some years I have had the privilege to sit alongside one of your longest and most loyal BAFC fans.

“The club is clearly a very significant part of his life. He is of the old school and does a lot to support others while making little fuss about doing so. He will never complain to the club because he is not that sort.”

Bernard said: “In all the years I have been watching Burton Albion I never dreamed we would be doing this well. It’s a pleasure to be a part of it.”
