MATTHEWS READY TO FIGHT FOR GOALKEEPING SLOT

27 August 2015

AFTER putting in a fine display in the cup tie against Middlesbrough Remi Matthews is hoping to challenge Jon McLaughlin for the No 1 slot.

He said: "I'm here to play games. How many that will be I don't know, whether that's 10 games, 20 games or 30 games.

"You have a good No 1 here at the minute. Jon was excellent for the lads last season so we will have to see how we go.

"It wasn't just me against Middlesbrough. I know we lost 2-1 but I thought everyone was excellent. We were unlucky not to get something out of it.

"They came here to pressure us but we had a game plan,  stuck to it and defended really well against a team pushing for promotion to the Premiership."

Among a string of saves from Matthews was a fantastic effort to deny Grant Leadbitter after his shot took a deflection

Matthews says: "I was a big deflection but that's what I'm put in the starting 11 for, to make saves for the lads."

The Brewers head towards Shrewsbury on Saturday as they return to League One action and and after making eight changes for the Capital One Cup some players including Matthews will have given the gaffer some decision headaches.

The keeper says: "When you get a chance you have to shine and be the best player on the pitch. I think some of the lads today have shown why they should be in the starting eleven."
