BURTON Albion’s newest signing believes that he can improve as a player after signing a two-year deal with the Brewers.
Midfielder Calum Butcher was lured back to England from Scottish Premiership club Dundee United by Albion boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and says that one of the reasons he signed was because he believes that the former Holland international and assistant manager David Oldfield can add to his game.Butcher says: “As a player you are always looking to improve and with the staff at Burton, Jimmy and David, they improve players.
"The way they train is all about improving and that’s why it was a massive incentive for me to go there, because I want to keep improving. I’m still young, but at 24 I want to kick on and have a good season.
“I have to go in and earn my place. No-one is going to walk straight into the team anywhere. I’m going to work hard, I will have to do that to even get a shirt.
"It’s one step at a time and hopefully I can do well. But first and foremost it’s about Burton, the club having a good season and me doing well for them.”
Butcher enjoyed his two years playing in Scotland for Premiership outfit Dundee United but is glad to be back in England.
He said: “Scotland is a good shop window to play in.
"There are a lot of games on TV and we had a good cup run last year, getting to the final of the League Cup.
"You also get to play in some big games – in front of 40,000 people in the cup against Celtic – so it is good experience.
"I enjoyed my time there, and they offered me another contract, but I wanted to see what else was out there and was looking to move south.”
