HASSELBAINK SAYS HIS SIDE ARE LUCKY THAT MCLAUGHLIN IS IN GOOD FORM

23 March 2015

A fourth win on the bounce kept Burton Albion firmly on top of the Skybet League 2 table

Strugglers Tranmere Rovers were put to the sword by some razor sharp finishing. It didn’t come without scares though as Tranmere grabbed a goal back and then saw a penalty well saved by Brewers No.1 Jon McLaughlin. Hasselbaink told burtonalbionfc.co.uk “There were a lot of scares.”

“We started ever so well first half, it was 2-0 and you know then that Tranmere are going to do something so we needed to decide if we were going to stay with our beliefs and our script and our organisation.”

Two goals in four first half minutes from Damien McCrory and Lucas Akins had the Brewers almost cruising to another three points with barely a quarter of the game gone. With these two quick-fire goals, Hasselbaink thought his team became a little bit arrogant.

“The thing is, we became a little a little bit arrogant thinking that we have to do more than we have to do.

“Taking an extra touch and an extra pass when we didn’t have to do that.

“They then came more into the game and they scored a worldie – a good goal.

“Then you are on the back foot because you didn’t do what you used to do ten minutes ago.”

A late Tranmere corner was seen off with Hugill winning a header inside the box but beyond the back post run of Rory Donnelly. The home side had two free kicks in first half stoppage time but were unable to muster a meaningful threat on the Burton goal, Albion making sure they went in ahead at the break.

“Luckily the break came when it came and we could assess a few things but then second half, we didn’t start how we can start.

“The longer they didn’t score, I felt that we always had a chance to score a third goal.

“Obviously we are a little bit lucky that Jon is in good form and saved the penalty.

“That is two consecutive penalties in two games and you need those moments in your year and that was the moment for us.”
