JOHNSTONE: DELIGHTED TO GET THE GOAL IN THE END

17 April 2015

A 98th minute equaliser from Denny Johnstone earned Burton Albion a more than deserved point on a night when it looked like the Brewers luck was out and relegation battlers Carlisle United were going to escape back to Cumbria with three points.

The crossbar and post were rattled and the goalkeepers palms were stung, several times but Burton couldn’t find a way through Carlisle United…Until Denny Johnstone popped up with an equaliser in the 99th minute.

“It was mad really.” Said the Scotsman after scoring his first goal since joining on loan from Birmingham.

“From missing the penalty to the amount of shots on target we had.

“The Carlisle players put their bodies on the line for the last half an hour.

“We knew it was going to come from somewhere so I am just delighted I got the goal in the end.”

It was a cross by Nasser El Khayati just like he had been doing all night that provided the assist. First, Stewart took aim and whistled a shot past the post and with the last kick of the game JOHNSTONE proved the hero. Gillespie only half cleared a ball into the box and the Birmingham loanee swept home into the bottom corner to salvage a point at the death.

“I actually miss-hit it.”

“It was one of those games that was going to be something like that, a miss-hit shot or something and Kevin Stewart had a shot from distance which was so close.

“I was just thinking it was going to be one of those nights, especially when we missed the penalty.

“They all count at the end of the game.”
