ON THE WHISTLE MATCH REPORT - CHESTERFIELD

12 February 2016

BURTON ALBION 1 CHESTERFIELD 0

BURTON Albion extended their lead at the top of League One to seven points with a win against Chesterfield.

Nigel Clough's side won the game thanks to a Calum Butcher strike.

It was a cagey opening 15 mins with no team gaining an edge.

On 21 minutes after a Duffy cross was headed back across the goal by John Mousinho, Stuart Beavon unleashed a fierce volley which struck Chesterfield's Liam O'Nell in the head. The unfortunate player was stretchered off after a long delay in the game.

The Brewers threatened more after that with Calum Butcher lifting the ball just over the bar on 38 minutes after three consecutive corners.

Two minutes later the visitors came close when Sam Hird headed into the side netting.

On 45 minutes Butcher found space in the box and lashed home past Tommy Lee in the Chesterfield goal.

Half-time: 1-0

The Brewers pushed forward after the break with Bennett looking dangerous on the left and Beavon threatening to break clear on 58  mins before being cynically brought down by Tom Anderson, who was booked.

A deflected shot from Damien McCrory looped safely into Lee's hands as Albion pushed for a second.

On 76 mins Lucas Akins replaced Mason Bennett and Tom Flanagan came on for Shane Cansdell-Sherriff.

Three minutes later Beavon's low cross from the left was bundled out with Duffy poised to make it two.

On 84 mins Calum Butcher was replaced by Callum Reilly.

On 88 mins Lee was forced to Parry a 20-yarder from Beavon.

Full time: 1-0
