Young midfielder happy with first Football League strike
Matty Palmer set the Brewers on the way to victory over Mansfield Town with his first Football League goal and afterwards admitted that having to wait for his 63rd league appearance to break his duck was too long."I have waited too long to be honest" admitted Matty, "I was really pleased to score today and help get the three points and hopefully I can add a few more in the next few games. The gaffer has been practicing free kicks with myself and Damo [Damien McCrory] all week and it has paid off. Hopefully I can add to my tally next week.
As a spectacle it was the archetypal game of two halves with Albion dominating the first period and establishing a two goal lead before Mansfield took advantage of the windy conditions to get an early second half goal and throw everything at their hosts in search of an equaliser.
"I thought first half we did well as a team" Matty explained, "Obviously the conditions helped us in the first half and in the second half made it very difficult but I think all in all we coped with it well and got a good three points."
"They came out and put us under pressure and got an early goal which didnt help us and with the windy conditions it made getting out and getting up the pitch more difficult but we coped with it quite well in the end and deserved the points."
"With the wind as it was you couldnt play too long as it would come straight back at you so we had to play the conditions and we decided after their goal to pass it a bit more. I think we can do that better but we can learn from that and put it into practice next week."
Albion now face two tough looking away fixtures with a trip to Fratton Park to take on Portsmouth next on the list for Matty and the team and it is one of the fixtures that the young midfielder is relishing being a part of.
"They are the sort of games you look forward to. Portsmouth are a massive team in this league but we are looking forward to it and hoping we can go there and get another win."
The last few games have seen Palmer featuring in a wide midfield role rather than the central midfield role that supporters are used to seeing him in but the talented and versatile youngster is enjoying a role that gives him more chance to get forward.
"It's different and it takes a bit of getting used to but I'm enjoying it and getting more freedom going forward and that definitely helped me today."
