The New Year started brightly for the Brewers as they secured a 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town. George Taft scored the first goal of his career to give Burton a narrow win over promotion rivals Shrewsbury.

The defender steered a half-volley into the bottom-right corner from 12 yards following Matthew Palmer's corner.

Shrewsbury dominated the first half as Jon McLaughlin saved two James Collins headers and Bobby Grant's shot.

After the goal, Burton's Kelvin Maynard shot wide and hit the legs of Shrews keeper Jayson Leutwiler before Mickey Demetriou blazed over for the visitors.

The victory for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's Brewers saw them leapfrog Shrewsbury into second place in League Two, a point behind leaders Wycombe.

Burton remained just a point off the League Two top spot after surviving a second-half fightback to beat struggling Mansfield.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's side are second while the Stags are four points ahead of the bottom two in 20th.

Burton's Matt Palmer scored from a free-kick before Kelvin Maynard doubled the lead with a header.

Michael Raynes's header pulled a goal back for the visitors but they were unable to secure a point.

Burton missed their chance to go top of League Two with a draw at Portsmouth.

Matt Tubbs had a good chance to open his goal-scoring account for Pompey early on, but he failed to round Brewers goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.

McLaughlin then tipped Andy Barcham's volley onto the post, only for Jed Wallace to guide the rebound home.

Brewers midfielder Darragh Lenihan levelled when he was allowed to run at goal and fire past keeper Paul Jones eight minutes from time.

Substitute Adam McGurk scored a late equaliser for promotion-chasing Burton to deny York a first win in four games.

Debutant Emile Sinclair gave the Minstermen the lead from close range after being found by John McCombe.

Sinclair had many chances but was denied by goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin and shot narrowly over from distance.

Jacob Blyth missed two chances for the Brewers before McGurk curled in the equaliser, finding Bobby Olejnik's bottom corner from inside the area.

Defender Phil Edwards scored the only goal as Burton moved up to second in the table with victory over Bury.

Jacob Blyth drove into the side-netting as the Brewers enjoyed early pressure.

Bury's Nick Pope did well to push away a deflected Adam McGurk shot after the break, before Jon McLaughlin kept out a swerving effort from Soares.

Edwards put Burton ahead from Stuart Beavon's flick-on, but McLaughlin had to make a superb save to deny Daniel Nardiello's header for Bury late on.
