TIGHT DEFENCE MAKES GAFFER PROUD OF BREWERS

25 November 2015

RESTRICTING Wigan to just three shots on goal, with none on target, made Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink proud of his Albion team.

Talking about the impressive 1-0 win which took the Brewers back up to third in the table,  Hasselbaink says: “When my keeper doesn’t have to work, I  absolutely love it. That’s where I praise my team when my keeper doesn’t have to make a save. Then you know you have worked really well.

“But it’s not just the back four, it’s all 11 with us. We have to defend together and then attack in numbers. I don’t like to talk just about the back four. It is also the boys in front and the boys in front of them. You do need the unit of the back five to be right and have that communication between the centre halves and the goalkeeper and they have to be comfortable with each other. But when we talk about defending we include everybody."

Hasselbaink also praised his side’s ability to press a good Wigan side

“Why can’t you press for 90 minutes?,” he said. “You just have to be fit.  Our strikers have to press for however long it takes. I don’t think every game is a pressing game. Wigan was. You have to know where and when to press and we have our trigger and we have to be a pressure side to be successful. I knew that from day one. That’s our belief.”
