Brewers midfielder delighted with Luton win
Brewers boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink described returning midfielder Robbie Weir's performance against table topping Luton Town as 'immense' in his post match summary of the game and the Irishman was pleased with his own contribution after only making the substitutes bench against Wycombe on Monday but returning to the side after Darragh Lenihan missed out with a groin injury."On Monday I was left out of the team and the boys did really well." Robbie said, "Darragh came in for his first game then and I thought he was immense too. He wasn't able to play today and I stepped up and I knew I needed to play well to be fair and I thought I did."
"With a new manager coming in I think everyone has to be on their toes. Nobody wants to be left out. It was disappointing for me to be left out on Monday but coming back in today I felt like I had a point to prove and hopefully, in the managers eyes, I did that." he continued.
John Still's side proved to be difficult opposition for the Brewers and whilst the Brewers showed more of their attacking flair against Wycombe on Monday their defensive solidity is what shone through against the Hatters to depose them from the top of the table and send Albion second, only on goal difference, to Wycombe.
"Luton are a very good side." Robbie admitted, "I think we battled well. Sometimes we could have played better football and control the game a little bit more but overall I think it was a great three points for us. That is all that matters at the moment especially against teams like this."
"We were defensively very sound today. They found it very hard to break us down and the gaffer has said that it is a platform for us to build on. We have to keep on going from here and keep moving up. We have another tough week ahead of us going into Shrewsbury and that will be another test for us."
Albion's form heading into the Wycombe game had been somewhat patchy after a magnificent start to the campaign and Robbie felt that it maybe just needed the new manager to come in to give them the impetus back again. He said:
"I think teams knew that we were going to step our game up with a new manager coming in. Obviously in those two games we have had top of the table clashes and we have stood up to be counted. I dont want to speak too soon but if we keep on doing what we have been doing then I think we will definitely be up there."
"We can take an awful lot of confidence from today into the next game. Morale is very high at the moment. We have gone away to Wycombe, top of the table, and won there and then come back to the Pirelli and beat Luton, also top of the table and both sides will be up there as well. We have to keep going though and build on what we have done and it will be another good test for us to see where we are at Shrewsbury."
"After that tough run we just needed to get our spark back and maybe we just needed the new manager coming in to give us that. The lads are buzzing about now so hopefully we are back on track."
The new manager has already said that he wants to play a more expansive, passing game and Robbie reassured everyone that the players are adapting well to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's methods and ideas.
"The gaffer is a very good coach. He explains things very, very well, right down to the little things that make a big difference. We are all confident with the style of play that he wants and it is going very well at the moment."
