Paul Peschisolido bore the grin of a manager very satisfied with his day's work as he unveiled his two new signings today, Liverpool Academy striker James Ellison and experienced Rochdale defender Nathan Stanton.
"I am delighted to get both James and Nathan on board" Paul said, "I think that potentially, from what I saw of James last season and in pre-season so far this year, he is a very exciting prospect. He has had a good schooling at Liverpool and he is young and hungry."
"He just wants to play and certainly I hope we can offer him that this season. I think he could possibly be a surprise package this season."
"Obviously with Nathan, he is a player we admired last season in a very good Rochdale side. Nathan brings steel, experience and pace to the side and I feel that the squad is really starting to come together now."
Whilst eighteen year old Ellison comes to the club without a senior first team game under his belt the manager has been impressed with what he has seen of the Bootle born youngster having seen him play against the Brewers for Sheffield United reserves and also for the Brewers in a practice match towards the end of last season.
"I am a firm believer that if you are good enough then you are old enough and we will see how James gets on" explained the Brewers boss, "People may say that it is a gamble but he is eighteen years old and we have seen that he can score goals, he has good movement, he is aggresive in the way that he plays and he is sharp. You have got to give these players a platform at some stage to perform and hopefully we can do that this season and we will see the best of him."
Peschisolido had to fight off competition from other League 2 sides to secure the signature of centre back Stanton but believes that what he and his backroom team are trying to do speaks volumes and can be crucial in enticing ambitious players to the Pirelli Stadium saying:
"When I am selling the club to him, hopefully it pays off and in this instance it did. On the back of last season we explained what we were going to do here at the club. In fairness I think he hads spoken to one or two of the players who gave us a good gee up, which is nice and we tend to think we are doing things right on the training pitch. We try to be as modern as we can and there is a lot of thought that goes into our training sessions. Hopefully Nathan has bought into that and he will be a big signing for us."
The Brewers boss knows that stemming the flow of goals into the Albion net is an area that needs improving after his side conceded 71 goals in League 2 and now the Brewers boss almost has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal as he seeks to tighten up his defence.
"When you look at the fact that we have Tony James, who was our player of the season last year and we have Ryan Austin who is coming back to fitness and who before he got injured was fantastic" Paul explained, "You bring in Darren Moore, now we have Nathan Stanton and we also have Guy Branston and you have five centre halves there who could all rectify the problems we had at the back last season."
So how far is the Brewers boss from having the squad that he wants in place for the start of the new season?
"We are getting there" he says, "I have got to say that there is still probably one or two more signings that I would like to bring in but we will have a look at a few of the triallists that we have got in and we have got Aaron Webster who has come back extremely fit which I am delighted about. There is probably a little bit of work to be done on the squad but I said before these two lads came in that I was happy with the way the squad was coming together and now I am extremely happy."
Peschisolido also confirmed that there was no further progress on any deal to take Albion defender Guy Branston to Torquay United after the defender enjoyed a successful loan spell at Plainmoor in the second half of last season. The Devon side have made it known that they would like to have Branston on the south coast again this season but Peschisolido says a deal is far from being completed.
"I spoke to Paul Buckle and told him the situation and he told me that they had done as much as they can and that the deal is dead"
"So as far as I am aware he is our player until the end of this season. To be fair to Guy he has come back really fit and his attitude has been superb."
