Phil is a versatile defender or midfielder who joined Albion on a one year deal this summer having originally been a target for Gary Rowett twelve months earlier. After signing his first professional deal as an 18 year old with Wigan Athletic his first experience of first team football came from spells with Morecambe and Accrington Stanley during both clubs spells in the Conference. At Stanley his arrival coincided with the club hitting the top of the Conference and Phil signed permanently at the Crown Ground in January 2006 picking up a League winners medal at the end of his first campaign.

Accrington enjoyed Phil’s services for five further seasons as his ability to play in multiple positions proved invaluable and despite being deployed in a mainly defensive position Phil finished his final season at Stanley as joint top scorer with thirteen goals. His form at the Crown Ground earned him a move to Stevenage and the chance to play in League One. Phil made 27 appearances for Borough before linking up with former boss John Coleman at Rochdale in an initial loan deal that led to a permanent move in the summer of 2012.

After over 50 appearances for Dale Phil rejected a new contract to link up with Brewers ahead of the 2013-14 season.
