A powerful and agile central defender, Marcus joined the Brewers after impressing in pre-season training following his release from fellow League 2 side Rochdale. Originally a youngster with Oldham Athletic, Marcus was quickly sent out on loan to gain experience leading him to Spotland where he played nine times impressing enough to earn a permanent move in January 2008. Whilst establishing himself at ‘Dale, Marcus spent a loan spell with Barrow in the Conference returning to Spotland to challenge for a first team spot alongside current Albion teammate Nathan Stanton. After helping Rochdale to promotion, Marcus was a regular in the League 1 side during 2010-11 making 50 appearances in all competitions and scooping the Player Of The Year award along the way.
