A highly experienced goalkeeper, Stephen joined the Brewers in January 2016 initially for the remainder of the 2015-16 season after returning from a spell in the Indian Super League with Kerala Blasters.
After starting his career with Rochdale it was at West Ham United that Stephen made his breakthrough having been signed for the Hammers as a 16 year old by Harry Redknapp for an initial £250,000.
Most of his experience was gained through loan spells away from Upton Park, Wycombe, Hull, Coventry City and Derby County providing first team opportunities before Stephen established himself at West Ham making 68 appearances before a permanent move to the Rams in the summer of 2006.
In his first season he helped Derby to the Premier League via the play-offs (his second play-off victory) going on to make over 150 appearances for the Pride Park club with loan spells at Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday and Cardiff adding to his career stats prior to a permanent move to Hillsborough.
Millwall, Gillingham (loan) and Doncaster Rovers have subsequently signed Stephen before his spell on the sub-continent. Stephen signed a new one year deal with the Brewers in the summer.
