Brewers draw with Matlock

22 July 2017

First-half goals from Joe Sbarra and Marcus Dinanga earned the Brewers a 2-2 draw away to Matlock Town.

Sbarra opened the scoring, before two goals from Matlock trialists pegged the Brewers back. Dinanga scored, against the club he was so prolific for last season, to make it 2-2.

The Brewers started the game strongly and Matty Palmer fired the first warning shot with an effort that went just wide from range.

Then, the opener came. Sbarra latched onto a superb flick from Dinanga and saw his initial effort saved before he squeezed the ball home for the opener.

Dinanga, who enjoyed a fruitful spell on-loan at Matlock last season, was looking dangerous in the early stages and went close in the 10th minute, forcing a stunning save out of goalkeeper Phil Barnes.

Matlock were not deterred by the Burton pressure and turned the game on its head with two goals in four minutes. The first came when one of Matlock's trialists capitalised on an error from Jake Buxton and slotted past Harry Campbell to equalise.

Another Trialist then gave the hosts the lead in stunning fashion, curling home a free-kick from the edge of ther box.

The Brewers drew level in the 36th minute. Dinanga won the ball off of a Matlock defender a drove the ball past Barnes. Dinanga went close a further two times in the next five minutes, first forcing a save from range and then firing just over from inside the box.

The half finished with the two sides level, but Matlock started the second period strongly as two trialists combined to create a chance, but the header from a good cross lacked power.

Burton pressed hard for a winner, but Dinanga's powerful effort stinging the palms of Barnes was as close as they came in the second-half.

Former Brewer Joe Doyle-Charles almost won the game for Matlock but his shot went just over and the game ended level.
