MATCH PREVIEW | IPSWICH TOWN (H)

15 August 2022

BURTON Albion play the first of back-to-back home games on Tuesday night, taking on Ipswich Town at the Pirelli Stadium (7.45pm kick-off).

The Tractor Boys have had a positive start to the season, drawing once and winning twice - including a 3-0 victory over MK Dons at the weekend.

HEAD 2 HEAD

The Brewers recorded their first ever win over Ipswich last season, a 2-1 victory at the Pirelli Stadium almost a year ago to the day, with goals from Joe Powell and Lucas Akins cancelling out Joe Pigott's effort.

Other than that, Ipswich have had the upper hand in all games since the sides first met in 2016, winning eight out of 10 meetings in total. The solitary draw was a goalless encounter in the Championship back in February 2018.

The most recent meeting between the two sides came at Portman Road in March, where the hosts took a 3-0 victory.

Match Reports

MATCH REPORT: BURTON ALBION 0-1 IPSWICH TOWN

16 August 2022

A goal on the hour mark from former Burton man Marcus Harness saw Albion fall to defeat as League One pacesetters took all the points back to Suffolk with a 1-0 win.

There was precious to choose between the sides throughout a closely fought encounter with Albion going close on a number of occasions but without being able to find the net and it proved to be a frustrating night as Harness grabbed victory for Ipswich with one of very few clear cut chances.

Albion showed two changes from the side that started Saturday's 4-4 draw with Accrington Stanley. Calum Butcher failed to make it after picking up a groin problem at the weekend and Deji Oshilaja came in for the former Dundee United man. The other change saw Victor Adeboyejo drop to the bench as Terry Taylor was handed a first start of the season.

The Brewers were on the front foot immediately and an almighty scramble in the Ipswich box saw the ball cannon back off the bar before a Town defender got a vital touch to prevent Conor Shaughnessy heading in by the post.

The Burton defender stayed down in a heap and after receiving attention was unable to continue as he moved gingerly around the perimeter of the pitch to be replaced by Joe Powell, Deji Oshilaja dropping into the back four to cover.

Ipswich began to settle as they looked to preserve their position at the top of the table and a through ball sent Freddie Ladapo in behind the Burton defence but pushed slightly wide he fired across goal and wide of the far post.

Former Albion favourite Marcus Harness almost cost his side a goal midway through the first half with a poor backpass that went straight to Ahadme who was onto the ball in a flash before forcing a good save to his left from Christian Walton and there were more nervy moments at the back for the visitors moments later when Jonny Smith put in a wickedly teasing cross that eluded Ahadme and was just fired wide at full stretch by Davis Keillor-Dunn.

Ladapo saw a shot deflected over the target at close range as the visitors looked to up the tempo and pressure and Sone Aluko was also closed down and forced into a shot that was deflected wide as well.

Powell almost had Albion ahead as the half time whistle was about to go, a free kick rolled short to him and Powell fizzing a long range effort just wide of the target.

Half time: Burton Albion 0-0 Ipswich Town

Albion were quickly back on it again at the start of the second half as Smith whipped a dipping shot over the bar in the opening exchanges.

But Ipswich were quick to respond with Lee Evans set up for a long range effort on goal on 53 minutes that Viljami Sinisalo had to push around the post.

A poor back pass from Tom Hamer was intercepted by Ladapo who wraced through but was denied by the big Finn. And as the game continued at a frenetic pace a loose pass in the Ipswich defence saw Smith nip in but driven wide he found Ahadme who was denied by a superb save from the leg of keeper Christian Walton.

When the goal it was somewhat harsh on Albion as HARNESS was able to turn just outside the box and drill a low shot inside the post.

Kayden Jackson screwed a shot wide from a tight angle as Town looked to get in behind Albion and Lee Evans fired a deflected effort over the bar under pressure on the edge of the box.

Skipper John Brayford brought a save from Walton on 78 minutes with a firm header from Powell's free kick.

Adeboyejo came on inside the last ten minutes when Oshilaja picked up a knock and was unable to continue with Albion pushing for an equaliser and Louise Moult was also called upon for the closing stages.

Albion came up against a resolute Town defence in the closing stages and there was to be no equaliser resulting in a harsh defeat for the Brewers.

ALBION: Sinisalo; Brayford, Hughes, Shaughnessy (Powell, 5), Hamer; Taylor, Oshilaja (Adeboyejo, 82), Borthwick-Jackson; Smith (Moult, 88), Ahadme, Keillor-Dunn.
Substitutes: Garratt, Onyango, Lakin, Castro.
