MATCH REPORT | BOLTON WANDERERS 1-0 BURTON ALBION

1 January 2024

ALBION suffered defeat on the road as Jasper Moon’s unfortunate own goal proved to be all that separated them from Bolton Wanderers.

There was little that the central defender could do when John Brayford’s clearance cannoned back off him and into the net six minutes into the second half as a disciplined performance from the Brewers went unrewarded.

After finishing 2023 with back-to-back 1-0 wins Albion looked to get 2024 off to a positive start with the tough away game at the Toughsheet Community Stadium against a Wanderers side firmly in the race for automatic promotion.

Gary Mills was forced into changes with Ryan Sweeney unable to start after picking up an injury against Shrewsbury, Jake Caprice coming in on the right to allow Jasper Moon to drop in the centre of defence. Kwadwo Baah, initlally only named on the bench ended up starting when Steve Seddon pulled up in the warmup and had to drop out. Ciaran Gilligan, originally in to replace Baah, started out wide.

Paris Maghoma had an early chance for the home side after three minutes, twisting and turning on the right-hand side of the box before dragging a low left foot shot just wide of Max Crocombe’s post.

A long throw from Moon caused problems for the Bolton defence and Sam Hughes was able to use his aerial threat to get onto Moon’s cross clipped into the box, although his header was also off target.

With Baah operating in a more central role, he helped fashion a chance on seven minutes with Joe Powell eventually seeing his shot take a wicked deflection before looping narrowly over.

Bolton failed to capitalise on a superb situation when Victor Adeboyejo’s perfectly timed run broke the Burton offside trap and Albion were grateful to a superb save from Crocombe to retain parity, saving as the ex-Albion striker tried to slip the ball inside the near post.

A Bolton free kick on 22 minutes had goal written all over it as Aaron Morley drilled in a low shot but Crocombe somehow got a strong arm to it low down to his right to keep it out.

Morley forced another excellent save from Crocombe on 42 minutes with a rising 22-yard drive that was parried over at the expense of a corner.

HALF TIME: BOLTON WANDERERS 0-0 BURTON ALBION

Albion almost got off to the perfect start in the second half from a well worked set piece. Powell resisted the temptation to shoot from a 25-yard free-kick, instead clipping the ball into the middle where Moon got his head to the ball and Lubala was just unable to poke home.

However, Bolton wasted little time capitalising as they went in front. Josh Dacres-Cogley created the danger with a low cross into the box and skipper Brayford was unlucky to see his clearance rebound off MOON and into the net.

Bolton quickly looked for a second to give them some breathing space and Randell Williams was not far away with a low angled drive on 59 minutes.

Morley resumed his ongoing battle with Crocombe on 72 minutes with a rasping low drive that, this time, fizzed just wide of the target.

Albion made an attacking double change on 77 minutes with both Mason Bennett and Cole Stockton sent on to replace Gilligan and Baah.

But it was Bolton’s sub who went close moments later as Dacres-Cogley squirmed his way onto the area again and picked out Jon Dadi Bodvarsson whose shot on the turn inside the six-yard area was blocked away.

Josh Walker took over from Lubala on 82 minutes as Albion continued to search for an equaliser.

Bodvarrson could have helped wrap things up for Wanderers on 85 minutes finding space on the left and his cross evading Dion Charles by inches at the back post for what would have been a tap-in.

Another substitute, Cameron Jerome wasted another good chance to wrap things up as the game entered the 90th minute, blazing wastefully over after more good work from Bodvarsson.

ALBION: Crocombe; Hughes, Brayford, Moon; Caprice, Gilligan (Bennett, 77), Oshilaja, Powell, Kamwa; Lubala (Walker, 82). Baah (Stockton, 77).

Substitutes: Blackman, Harper, Carayol, Tamen.

GOALS: BOLTON – Moon (51 own goal)

Referee: Darren Drysdale
