BURTON Albion women got back to winning ways after an impressive 2-0 victory over Solihull Ladies. With goals from, Alice Lilley and Amber-Leigh Denny, being the difference.

The Brewers started the match confidently and were unlucky to not have taken the lead in the first ten minutes. An intricate passing move lead to the ball falling to, Hajrah Mahmood, who saw her strike from the edge of the box saved.

Solihull slowly found their way into the match and around 16 minutes in they nearly broke the deadlock. A sweetly, struck free-kick cannoned off the cross bar and Alice Langstone was there to gratefully claim the rebound.

Langstone, who was back in the squad following her absence last week, was called into action minutes later. A superb save down low to her left kept the match goalless.

Farrah Hoyle was a constant threat down the right-hand side, with her speed and quick feet causing massive problems for the Solihull full-back. Hoyle was close to finding the back of the net, however, her strike was blocked bravely.

The first-half came to a close, with both teams failing to convert their chances. Burton had the majority of possession and were moving the ball around superbly.

The Brewers opened the half with a huge chance to open the scoring. Some great passing out from the back led to Hoyle whipping a wicked ball into the back-post where Mahmood’s header flew just wide.

Burton’s pressure was rewarded at around the 58 minute mark, after Alice Lilley found the back of the net. It was another brilliant passing move with Hoyle playing a beautiful through-ball to Lilley, who after a bit of battling with the goalkeeper, finished convincingly.

Moments later, Burton doubled their lead from the spot. Lilley, who was a constant thorn in Solihull’s side, managed to nick the ball away from the defender and win her side a penalty. Denny converted emphatically, putting the Brewers two goals to the good.

The second goal appeared to deflate the Solihull side who were struggling to create anything to trouble Langstone in goal. The Brewers continued to pressure with Mahmood and Millie Drinkhall having chances to extend the lead.

Beth Naqwi put in a stellar performance in the holding-midfield role. Picking up loose balls and playing defence-splitting passes throughout the match. She nearly topped it off with a goal, however, there was not enough power to trouble the Solihull keeper.

The full-time whistle blew and Burton rode out 2-0 victors over a well-drilled Solihull side. A clean-sheet on Langstone’s return and 3 big points for Tommy Booth’s side.
