FA CUP REPORT | BURTON ALBION WOMEN 2-4 LICHFIELD CITY LADIES

1 November 2022

BURTON Albion Women bowed out of the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup after a 4-2 home defeat to Lichfield Ladies.

The Brewers started the match as the brighter side, creating a number of chances in the opening ten minutes. The pick of the bunch falling to Charlotte Jarvis, who saw her effort cleared off the line by the Lichfield defender.

On the 15 minute mark, the home side managed to find the back of the net. Alice Lilley opened the scoring for The Brewers, smashing the ball into the back of the net from point blank range following a goalmouth scramble at a corner.

Burton continued to pressure after the goal and weren’t looking to rest on their laurel’s. Dannie Oxley made some important saves to keep the Lichfield attack at bay.

However, around 20 minutes in Lichfield began to get a foot-hold on the match, which was rewarded with an equaliser. A long range effort managed to loop over Oxley, who was left with no chance between the posts.

Lichfield took the lead shortly after following some great passing football. The strike from the edge of the box had too much on it and flew past Oxley into the bottom corner.

Things went from bad to worse for the home side. Some great work down the right-hand side from the Lichfield winger, who then found the perfect pass into the box for the striker to guide home.

Even after conceding three goals in a matter of minutes, Burton didn’t stop trying to play and looked a constant threat from corners. but went in behind at the break.

HALF-TIME: BURTON ALBION 1-3 LICHFIELD CITY

The home side went close to getting a goal back early in the second half, as Millie Drinkhall saw her effort tipped just past the post by the Lichfield keeper.

Drinkhall broke through the Lichfield defence yet again, this time squaring the ball to Hoyle at the back post. Who was unlucky to see her effort rise just above the crossbar.

Around 65 minutes in, against the run of play, the visitors extended their lead. The Lichfield winger found herself some space at the back post and stroked the ball calmly past Oxley.

Burton didn’t give up and continued to pressure the Lichfield defence and their luck was rewarded when Hajrah Mahmood rose the highest and headed home from a corner.

The Brewers pushed for a third, Mahmood almost getting her second after forcing a great save out of the Lichfield keeper.

Burton’s efforts were unrewarded as the match came to a close and Lichfield progressed to the next round of the FA Cup.
