Brewers Youngsters Bow Out of Cup

17 January 2013

Leeds United 6-1 Burton Albion

The Burton Albion youth team bowed out of this season’s FA Youth Cup with a 6-1 defeat at Elland Road.

Chris Dawson scored twice inside the opening 10 minutes to put Leeds United in firm command before completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot as United ran out comfortable 6-1 winners.

Dawson opened the scoring inside four minutes after great work by Lewis Walters. Walters showed good pace to advance down the right before slipping the ball inside to Dawson, whose shot squirmed under the body of Burton keeper Alex Horton.

It was 2-0 moments later when Dawson received the ball on the edge of the box and after taking a touch to work himself an opening he unleashed a right foot strike which Horton could do nothing about.

It was 3-0 before the half-hour after a clumsy challenge saw United awarded a penalty. Skipper Mowatt stepped up to take responsibility and converted from the spot.

It took Burton 30 minutes to create a chance, and when Leandro Browne latched on to a long ball forward he was denied by the quick thinking Eric Grimes. The Leeds keeper was beaten moments later, though, when Ben COWDRILL cashed in on some sloppy defending to pull a goal back.

The visitors didn't give it up the fight in the second half and Marcus Harness sent a shot from distance just wide of the upright as Burton looked for a way back.

The tie was effectively ended before the hour mark, though, when Dawson completed his hat-trick. The youngster stepped up to convert a penalty after being brought down himself.

There was still time for more from Leeds when, with 11 minutes remaining, Afolabi Coker scored from close range after good work by Mowatt.
