Brewers receive annual dental check-up

26 July 2013

The Brewers’ fitness levels may be increasing by the day as the 2013/14 campaign gets ever closer, but provisions have also been made off the pitch to ensure the health of the players prior to a buys and demanding season.

Each year, Burton Albion players have an annual dental check-up at the Pirelli Stadium to ensure the squad’s oral health; a fundamental aspect of health and well-being.

This year, the club continued its association with Branston-based Dental Perfection, with Dr Tony Taunk and colleagues taking a look at every Burton player.

Dr Taunk commented: ‘As part of our remit to keep the players here at Burton Albion fit and well we do a pre-season medical which makes up part of their assessment prior to the season.

‘We opened up a surgery in Burton a couple of years ago and were approached by the club, so we’ve been involved with the Brewers for a few seasons now and also look after other sports teams in the area such as Derby County and Derbyshire County Cricket Club.

‘Every season we get a mixture of situations to contend with, including impact injuries from elbows, knees and kicks and given the nature of the sport these can be quite serious.

‘From a preventative point of view, it’s important for the players to get a check-up before the season. Some of the players are very young and there are various potential issues from wisdom teeth coming through, holes, abscesses and infections.

‘Our aim is to make sure they are performing to their optimum levels and that’s why we’ve been at the club to check on the squad.’
