England stars visit Burton schools

19 June 2013

Anglesey Primary school and Mosley Academy welcomed England Internationals Sophie Bradley and Fern Whelan ahead of the eagerly anticipated International against World Cup holders Japan on Wednesday 26 June (KO 1.45pm) at the Pirelli Stadium.

Sophie Bradley, who has just been selected to be in Hope Powell’s squad for the UEFA 2013 European Championships and Fern Whelan, visited both schools to take part in a special coaching session. Pupils received top tips in a skills and drills session, got advice on how to get involved in football and had the chance to ask their burning questions about what it is like to play for England. They were also treated to an appearance by the three lion mascots Roary, Mane and Paws.

The children of Mosley Academy won a competition to have the players visit their school and have over 130 youngsters going to see the team in their final warm up match, before they fly to Sweden, to take part in the UEFA 2013 European Championships in July.

It has been decided the Japan game will kick-off at 1.45pm, a time negotiated to both secure the fixture against the World Champions and to give students across England, the chance to see some of the world’s best female players in action. All students can secure their tickets to the game for free, when applied for through their educational establishment, to help mark a special year for The Football Association - the governing body’s 150th anniversary and 20 years since they took over the running of the women’s game.

Sophie Bradley said: “It has been fantastic to come up to Burton to visit the schools today. All the kids have been brilliant and I think we are going to get fantastic support when we play in our final match again Japan next week. I am delighted to be selected for the squad for the Euro’s and hope that students across England will take up the chance to get free tickets and give us a really good send off.”

Prior to seeing the two teams in action, fans are invited to take part in FREE, fun football-based interactive games in association with Continental Tyres. Games include batak boards, a speed cage, a target shoot inflatable plus a new trailer which houses digital stations and The FA WSL and Cyprus Cup trophies. To add to the England party atmosphere, there will also be hair braiding and face painting, all of which will take place outside the stadium from 11.45am.
