Defender speaks ahead of Northampton trip
Ian Sharps says the Brewers are focused on winning all three points ahead of their trip to Northampton Town on Saturday.
The experienced defender was the unlikely hero when the two sides met on Boxing Day, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory at the Pirelli Stadium.
And despite the two teams being at opposite ends of the League Two table, Sharps is not underestimating the test they will face when the two sides meet again.
“We played well against them on Boxing Day in what was a really difficult game.
“They’ve changed their team a lot since we played them and it will be a different proposition to get the points.”
The Brewers are just three points adrift of third spot and as they look to try and clinch an automatic promotion spot it is points on the board and not performances that matter most in Sharps’s view.
“Performances are second to results at the moment but we’ll go out there and look to play our game as they’ll be under pressure.
“If we can keep it tight for the first twenty minutes and maybe nick a goal then their confidence might dip a little bit.”
And having recovered from injury recently and come back into the side to partner Shane Cansdell-Sherriff, the 33-year-old is delighted to be back on the pitch again.
“I’ve worked hard to get fit again with the physio and it wasn’t too dissimilar to when I left which is pleasing.
“You never really hit peak form until the end of the season so hopefully that will benefit the side.
“It promises to be an exciting end to the season.
“We’ve still got a chance of automatic promotion as well as the Play-Offs so whatever happens it is pretty good news.
“I think we are arguably the smallest side left in the top seven or eight of the division and nobody expects us to be up there.
“But inside the camp we know what we’re capable of and we’ve just got to keep going.”
