McGURK: WE DESERVED IT

28 August 2014

Striker delighted with Cup win

Burton Albion striker Adam McGurk was delighted after his goal sealed a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers in the Capital One Cup.

McGurk’s stunning free-kick won the game in the second half and the forward says the win was fully deserved.

“It was a great win for us. We all worked hard and I thought we deserved it after the chances we created and everyone’s buzzing,” he said.

The Brewers were good value for their first ever win against Premier League opposition, and the Albion created the majority of chances against a strong Rangers side. Despite that, McGurk feels they coped well with the visitors’ threat.

“They didn’t really cause us many problems. They had a couple of chances in the first half but didn’t really create much after half-time. It wasn’t a smash and grab win for us, we matched them all over and we’re delighted with the result.

“Everyone was pretty composed and we kept creating chances without being able to put them away and sometimes it can come back to haunt you, but thankfully it didn’t tonight,” McGurk added.

Tonight’s game was the sixth of a very busy start to the season, and the striker says the fitness levels of the squad are still very high despite the schedule.

“We’ve had a good pre-season and we’re all pretty fit. The training in between games has been just right without being too hard and it’s all about preparing for Saturday and maintaining our league record. Tonight

was good but now we have to focus on getting the points on Saturday,” he added.

McGurk’s free-kick was worthy of winning any game and the striker admits he was relieved to see the ball fly into the net to seal the win.

“It was about time I scored one of those as a few of them didn’t come off, especially last season. It’s good to get to get the winner in games like these.”
