HEDNESFORD TOWN 0-2 BURTON ALBION

22 July 2014

Brewers seal another pre-season win

Burton Albion built on Saturday’s 4-0 win over Sheffield United with a comfortable 2-0 pre-season victory over Hednesford Town at Keys Park. Goals came from speedy winger Lucas Akins in the first half, and defender Phil Edwards late on.

As with all pre-season friendlies, both teams took time to fully find their feet and the opening stages of the game became at times turgid and scrappy. The first proper chance of the game came in the 22nd minute when Alex MacDonald found the ball at his feet from a well rehearsed left wing corner routine, however he fired right into the keepers arms.

The same player was presented with another opportunity a minute later through more good build up play but the midfielder once again fired wide.

Burton broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when Lucas Akins picked up the ball just outside the area and his effort bobbled over the hands of Hednesford ‘keeper Ryan Price. Albion dominated most of the first half but had a scare in the 42nd minute when keeper Dean Lyness somehow managed to turn the ball over the cross bar after a powerful Hednesford header.

Lyness completed a carbon copy save a minute into the second half when Francino Francis sent the ball towards the goal but a strong right hand managed to palm the ball out for another corner to the home team.

In the 58th minute after strong build up play from the Brewers’ front three, Stuart Beavon fired in a low cross towards Weir that was hit straight at the Hednesford keeper when he had the whole goal to aim at. 16 year-old substitute Ben Fox nearly scored a 20 yard right footed effort with his first touch of the game in the 77th minute as the Brewers still looked in strong control of the game and a second goal began to look imminent.

The goal that put the game to bed came in the 87th minute for Burton when a Lucas Akins’ cross found its way to Phil Edwards after a scramble, and he placed the ball into the bottom right hand corner past the keeper to complete another comprehensive pre-season victory.
