AKINS: PROMOTION IS THE AIM

18 June 2014

New signing gives first interview

New Burton Albion forward Lucas Akins is delighted to have secured a move to the Brewers.

Akins’ signing was confirmed on Wednesday morning, and the former Stevenage player is already looking ahead.

“I’m delighted to sign and finally get it sorted.  I’m looking forward to getting to work and cracking on with my new team-mates.

“I’ve come here to improve myself as a player and also to help the club kick on from last year, which can only result in promotion,” said Akins.

Promotion, according to Akins, is something that the squad will be striving for next season, although he’s aware of the challenge ahead.

“Promotion is the simple aim. It’s the goal we set and whilst I’m not naïve enough to write off the other good teams in this league, I want to get the club as high as possible.

“I’ve sat down with Gary and spoken with him at length, and he’s convinced me that this is the best place for me to come. I believe he can improve us and I’m at an age where I can still develop, and hopefully I can do that at Burton.

“It was a relatively easy decision to sign, and it’s something that I’m happy with. I’m just looking forward to starting now,” he said.

Akins will be in familiar surroundings after working with Kevin Summerfield at Tranmere, whilst playing with John Mousinho last season.

“There’s a number of players that I’ve played against before so football can seem like one big family. I also worked with Kevin at Tranmere so that was a big incentive and I’m looking forward to working with him again.

“I also know John Mousinho from Stevenage so there’s a few good character, which is more important. The lads are hungry and so am I, so hopefully we can push ourselves further and get out of this league.”
