The Brewers made just 1 change from the team that opened Sky Bet League 1 at home to Scunthorpe.
In came Jon McLaughlin for Remi Matthews but the outfield 10 remained the same in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
It was a cagey first 15 minutes but it was the home side that had the first chances. McCrory brought down Bree right next to the corner flag which Barnsley won a corner from. Smith took the corner but a Watkins header wasn't going to beat pathetic fresh McLaughlin.
The first shot on target went in favour of the Brewers. Some great work down the middle by Duffy gave Beavon the chance to shoot from the edge of the box but his shot was tame and Davies held on.
Albion's first real chance came on 21 minutes when some great work by Nasser down the left provided the ball in the air for Duffy who's flick on was well saved by Davies for an Albion corner. The corner was eventually taken short before Barnsley cleared.
Shortly after, the Brewers had another great chance through El Khayati. He brought the ball down from a cross before rolling it to his left and firing low into the corner, only to be denied by Davies.
Nasser had caused Bree problems all half and it seemed to carry on that way. He tricked his way into the box before firing just wide of Davies' near post before the break.
Chances weren't something the Albion failed to create. A great McCrory cross was knocked down by Beavon but Duffy couldn't get his head over the ball and he fired way over the bar.
Tackle of the match certainly went to Barnsley's Roberts. Beavon was through on goal but he was being chased down which paid off for the centre back as he stopped Beavon in his tracks.
Half time: Barnsley 0-0 Burton Albion
Just 1 change at half time and it was the home side that made it. George Smith made way for Dan Crowley.
The Brewers had the better chances in the early stages of the second half but still couldn't find the back of the net. Edwards had 2 headers wide from corners which on another day, would have been certain goals.
The first Albion change was a like-for-like swap as Binnom-Williams replaced Akins.
GOAL: Barnsley were handed a penalty in the 66th minute as McCrory brought down Scowen just inside the box. Substitute Hourihane stepped up and fired hard to McLaughlin's left.
The Albion should certainly have been level 10 minutes later as Binnom-Williams shrugged off several defenders to play in Duffy but his shot curled way over the bar from 12 yards.
A double substitution was next on the cards as Hasselbaink introduced Thiele and Palmer into the game in place of Beavon and Weir.
Thiele didn't take long to get into action as he lined up a shot from 35 yards which was an absolute rocket but the cross bar denied him!
