THE ALBION SUFFER DEFEAT AGAINST HIGHER OPPOSITION

18 July 2015

The Albion began their home pre-season campaign with a 1-0 loss against Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Both competitors fielded strong sides as Duffy and Butcher were both handed a place in the starting XI.

The 2,702 fans inside the Pirelli Stadium didn't have to wait long for the first chance and it was the home side who had it. Mark Duffy took a shot from just outside the area, Ikeme fumbled and Akins was quick to follow up but he saw his shot hit the post.

The next chance came on eight minutes when the Brewers skipper brought down Dicko on the edge of the 18 yard box. Ex-Derby County man Michael Jacobs swung the free kick in, Afobe got the slightest of touches which saw the ball go just wide.

The first goal came on just ten minutes. Butcher lost the ball in the middle of the park, Afobe didn't waste any time in picking the ball up before passing it through to Dicko who poked it past McLaughlin.

It looked as though more trouble was to come as McLaughlin hacked down Afobe in the 18-yard box but the offside flag had already been raised.

The game turned rather flat after the penalty appeal before Duffy woke up the Pirelli Stadium crowd with a curling effort from 25 yards which Ikeme just watched go over the bar.

The best chance of the half for the Albion came on 31 minutes when Duffy received the ball with his back to goal, he turned well before playing in Butcher but the ball was too close to the Burton new boy and Ikeme saved the shot.

Half time was soon upon us and the Brewers went into the break a goal down.

Half Time: Burton Albion 0-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Just the one change at half time with Ikeme making way for Flatt between the Wolves sticks.

The first piece of action in the second half went Wolves' way. Weir barged Jacobs to the floor right on the edge of the box. Jacobs stepped up the take but it went well wide.

Another mistake was nearly costly. Maynard's back pass didn't make it back to McLaughlin, Afobe intercepted, rounded the 'keeper but his shot hit the post before Mousinho cleared. A let-off for the Brewers.

Wolves made a further two substitutions on 62 minutes when Golbourne and Evans made way for Ebanks-Landell and 17-year-old Ronan.

A debut came for new signing Anthony O'Connor as himself, Taft and Naylor entered the pitch to replace Butcher, McCrory and Akins.

Austin was given another chance to shine, as he has done for most of pre-season so far. He replaced Maynard on 74 minutes.

The Albion had the ball in the net on 76 minutes. Palmer whipped a corner in, Mousinho headed towards goal before Naylor smashed the ball home only to see it chalked off for offside.

It was a good workout for both sides in the end. Birmingham City, Leicester City and Derby County are all still to visit the Pirelli Stadium during pre-season.

Attendance: 2,702.
