At a young age, Cuvelier began his career with Mouscron before joining the Academy of English side Portsmouth.
Due to Portsmouth financial demise Cuvelier signed for Stoke City in the summer of 2010. At Stoke he has spent time out on loan at Walsall and Peterborough United.“I was 15/16 when I signed for Portsmouth when Harry Redknapp was the manager there then I went to Stoke where I had a few loan spells with Walsall and Peterborough and obviously then Sheffield and now Burton.”
At such a young age, moving countries and joining different teams was hard for Florent. He explained how difficult it was and said he felt as though there was a barrier in front of him, stopping him from making friends.
“It was really difficult because I couldn’t speak English either.
“When you’re that age, you want to make friends as fast as you can but if you don’t speak to the language there is obviously a big barrier.”
He wasn’t going to let the language barrier get in his way. He told burtonalbionfc.co.uk that when he was at Portsmouth, they were great to him. He has regular English lessons and they helped him with English DVD’s and subtitles.
“Portsmouth were great.
“I had English lessons three times a week and I watched DVD’s and the subtitles then you just pick it up and hopefully now I speak a bit better.”
