HASSELBAINK THINKS SIGNING A STRIKER ISN'T THE SOLUTION TO SCORING MORE GOALS

14 November 2015

JIMMY Floyd Hasselbaink insists signing a striker isn’t the solution to scoring more goals.

Burton Albion have the best defence in the league conceding only 13 goals in 16 games. Going forward, the Brewers have struggled to find the net average one goal per game.

Joint-top scorers Stuart Beavon and Nasser El Khayati both have six goals each with the next highest goal scorer being Lucas Akins on just one goal.

At a recent Q&A session with the Brewers boss, the question was asked whether he would be signing a striker on loan to help the likes of Stuart Beavon and Timmy Thiele who is yet to find the net for the Albion.

“I don’t think that is the solution.” Said Hasselbaink.

“We always look in every department to strengthen the squad if it needs it.

“It is a team effort and about the team, not about the individual.

“If you feel that we need to help then he needs to start working even harder, it is how it is.”

The main reason behind so many victories this season for the Brewers is the team effort and the work each member puts in to grab all three points.

“We are a team and that is why we are winning matches.

“At the moment we have Timmy helping him and he is doing a magnificent job.

“Yes he isn’t scoring but he is doing other things which is why we are winning games together.”

Last season, Hasselbaink brought in a whole load of players to the Pirelli Stadium to help the Brewers clinch the Sky Bet League Two title. This season, he hasn’t brought in half as many players and in a table produced by the Experimental 3-6-1, Hasselbaink’s team have used joint least amount of players so far this season (20) in the league.

“Of course we are always looking where can we strengthen but it isn’t easy.

“We want to bring the right characters in, we have a great dressing room so we don’t want to just bring an individual in who will add to the team and give us that extra.

“That isn’t easy because the squad we have is very competitive.

“We have to stay together and we will win together. When we win together it is good but we will also lose together.

“When we lose it still has to be good, that’s the importance about it and you still have to be together so getting only a striker in not just the solution, it is easily said.”

The Brewers success has been helped with the solidarity of the defence but not only the back four or back five, the defence starts from the front in the strikers.

“We can score many many more goals but then you will give something away at the back and we don’t want that at all. Scoring only is not the solution.”
