A guaranteed place in the starting XI is something no Burton Albion player has had so far this season.
With a 30-man squad, I think it is fair to say Hasselbaink has had plenty of options for all positions. At the start of the season, between seven and eight changes were made for each of the opening games, including cup fixtures.
“Competition is giving the manager a good headache.” Said the skipper John Mousinho.
He added “I think it is a case of driving the players who have got their shirts on and also it is healthy to be able to chop and change as well because we have got so many games, 46 without the cup.
“It is a long season and with the weather and the heavy pitches it is going to become quite physically draining.”
Depth is something Hasselbaink has certainly added to cope with the step from Sky Bet League Two to Sky Bet League One and so far, it has been healthy for the squad.
“We have got that strength and depth and you look at some players who aren’t playing, they are very good players.”
It makes you wonder when the new players are going to get their chance. Timmy Thiele, Aurelien Joachim, Tom Flanagan..They are all in Hasselbaink’s plans and Mousinho has urged them to get their head down and wait for their chance.
“It is important for those lads to keep their heads down and know that they are going to get a chance.”
