AWAY VERDICT: JURGEN KLOPP ON EFL CUP VICTORY

24 August 2016

Jurgen Klopp was delighted with the strong mentality of his side as they overcame Burton Albion 5-0 in what the German described as “the most difficult draw” of the EFL Cup second round.

The Reds, coming off the back of a 2-0 defeat to Burnley in the Premier League, came to the Pirelli Stadium under intense pressure as they look to go one better this campaign, having been defeated in the final of the League Cup last year.

Klopp was happy with the way that his side dealt with the expectation of the fixture.

“In the end it was not as difficult as we could have imagined expected because I think it was the most difficult draw.

“We were very serious and professional and we did our jobs, it was good.”

Klopp also insisted that he had been unaware about the size or atmosphere of the Pirelli Stadium, admitting that it had not factored into his side’s preparations for the game, but was quick to praise his opponent’s stature.

“Actually I had no idea about the ground so I couldn’t say anything about it, but it’s really nice here, the pitch is good which is what we need.

“I heard that the club is a little bit surprised that they are now in the Championship so maybe they have to change a little bit of the stadium, but it is a very nice club.

“There was the possibility of sensation if we had not been that serious but it is all good on this side really, we did our jobs.”

Klopp’s Reds now move on from the historic night, which saw the Brewers break their stadiums official attendance record with a crowd of 6,450 spectators while Burton go on to Friday night’s showdown against fierce local rivals Derby County at home.
